The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
